Design tools: Mood board

I am teaching a Design Thinking for Problem-Solving course for first-year BTec Data Science, Economics, Management, Psychology, and Law students at Vidya Shilp University, Bengaluru. As part of the process, I've begun developing course materials to support the lessons. I'll share these resources openly for educators teaching art and design principles or wishing to integrate them into their curriculum. A mood board:


When creating mood boards, designers are often influenced by three major psychological theories, one economic theory, four data science principles and common design principles. These theories and principles can impact how viewers perceive and feel about the design.


Colour Theory and Psychology: Colors play a significant role in evoking emotions and moods in mood board design. Colour psychology explores how specific colours can influence human behaviour and emotional responses. For example:


- Warm colours (red, yellow, and orange) evoke energy, passion, and excitement.

- Cool colours (blue, green, and purple) are calming and promote trust and relaxation.

- Neutral colours (black, white, grey) convey balance, professionalism, or sophistication.


Gestalt Theory: This psychological theory focuses on how humans perceive visual elements as whole forms rather than individual components. The theory suggests that people naturally group and interpret design elements based on proximity, similarity, closure, and figure-ground contrast. In mood boards, the arrangement of images and elements can create meaning by influencing how the viewer organizes and interprets the visual information.


Emotional Design Theory: Emotional design emphasizes how products and visuals evoke specific feelings and emotional connections in users. Don Norman's levels of emotional design—visceral, behavioural, and reflective—are often applied:


- Visceral: Immediate emotional reaction to the aesthetics (first impressions of the mood board).

- Behavioral: How well does the mood board convey its message (usability and coherence)?

- Reflective: Deeper emotional connection and long-term meaning attached to the design choices, such as nostalgia or personal relevance.


Utility Theory: This concept from classical economics relates to how individuals maximize their satisfaction or "utility" from goods and services. In mood board design, especially for commercial projects, designers aim to visually express the value or benefits of a product. The mood board will reflect the lifestyle or status that the product provides, catering to consumers' desire to maximize their perceived happiness or utility from a purchase.


Major Data Science Theories that Influence Mood Board Design:


Data-Driven Decision Making: This principle involves using data like user preferences or demographic insights to inform visual choices in mood board design. For example, designers may rely on analytics tools to understand how specific colours or styles resonate with their target audience, ensuring the mood board aligns with audience expectations.


A/B Testing: The concept of A/B testing is valuable in design, and mood boards can benefit from it by presenting different versions to test audience reactions, helping determine which visuals or layouts are more effective in conveying the intended message. This testing strategy can be extended using advanced segmentation techniques, ensuring that different designs resonate with specific audience segments.


Clustering and Segmentation: This is relevant when grouping design elements by theme, colour, or texture, allowing designers to tailor mood boards for different audience personas based on their visual preferences, leading to more personalized and effective design strategies.


Predictive Analytics: This approach informs mood board design by analyzing historical trends to predict future design preferences, ensuring the mood board stays ahead of trends.


Visualization and Dashboarding: Mood boards function similarly to data visualization by visually representing complex brand identities or project concepts. Designers can incorporate data visualization techniques to make analytical aspects more approachable.


These psychological, economic, and data science theories help mood board designers create visuals that appeal to the eye and evoke desired emotional and cognitive responses.


Design principles that are important in the design of a mood board:


Balance: Mood boards should maintain a sense of equilibrium in their composition. This can be achieved through symmetrical (evenly distributed elements) or asymmetrical (balance through contrast and differing visual weights) layouts. Balance prevents the mood board from feeling chaotic or cluttered.


Consistency and Unity: A cohesive theme or visual style is crucial in mood boards. Consistency ensures that all images, textures, and fonts align with the conveyed central concept or mood. This principle makes the board feel unified, making it easier for viewers to understand the overall vision.


Contrast: Effective colour, texture, or scale contrast can highlight critical elements within the mood board. Contrast draws attention to essential features and helps create visual interest, preventing the design from becoming monotonous.


Hierarchy: Visual hierarchy guides the viewer's eye through the board, prioritizing elements based on importance. More significant, bolder images or text may be placed in critical areas to draw immediate attention. In contrast, secondary elements are placed more subtly.


Proportion and Scale: The size of elements relative to each other can convey importance and create a sense of order. Larger images or text often suggest greater significance or impact, while more minor elements play supporting roles.


White Space (Negative Space): Leaving space between elements on a mood board is crucial for clarity. White space helps avoid visual overload, allowing each component to be properly appreciated. It also enhances the board's overall readability and aesthetic appeal.

Alignment: Ensuring elements are correctly aligned gives the mood board a clean and professional appearance. Proper alignment fosters organization and ensures that the layout doesn't appear haphazard or unstructured.
